Nature-based solutions to Climate Change - UK

Tony studied BSc Horticulture at the University of Bath in England before moving to the University of Liverpool to gain a PhD in restoration ecology focused on woodland creation on post mining land.

He then became lecturer and researcher in Landscape Management and Ecology at the University of Reading, with additional visiting lecturer responsibilities at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester.

It was during this time at Reading that he wrote a textbook on Urban Nature Conservation which was published by Taylor and Francis  (1997).

After working at Reading, he worked consultancy advising on ecological restoration of mine sites or desertified land across UK and overseas.

In 1999 he moved to Cornwall to join the team who created the Eden Project where his first responsibility was to lead the quarry restoration and to create 85,000 tonnes of soil from quarry waste. Then as Foundation Director he played a central role in developing the exhibits and the education programmes for public through to university level. This gave him direct experience in translating complex science issues into simple language that can engage the public.

During Covid lockdown he wrote a popular science book on garden ecology, called A Wonder in the Garden: The world  of nature just outside our doors.

He currently works with The Sensory Trust on a new project of inclusive climate action focusing on water cycle repair, Sensory Trust climate repair project focusing on water and inclusion.  Tony is a Diversty Mindset All-star, 2005 and 2025.
